Manhattan Pepperbox Pistols
The pepperbox pistol was one of the earliest designs to be manufactured and
marketed by the Manhattan Firearms Manufacturing Company, most likely
beginning in late 1856 or early 1857. The pepperboxes manufactured in 1856
have the company name on the barrel and those manufactured after 1856 have
the name on the left side of the hammer. According to Waldo Nutter in his book,
Manhattan Firearms, it is likely that less than 3,000 pepperboxes were
produced. They are found in three different barrel groupings: the 3 barrel, the 5
barrel, and the 6 barrel.
